About TMJ / TMD
TMJ involves joint pain due to inflammation of the temporomandibular joint in the face and jaw. The result is joint dysfunction. If you experience a clicking sound or inability to close your jaw or to open your mouth, this could be associated with TMJ. While TMJ is the most common TMD, patients can also suffer from joint pain in the jaw caused by tumors or cancerous growths. Our dentists will conduct a thorough oral examination, including digital X-rays, to identify TMD-associated problems. Treatment for TMDs, including TMJ, is also offered in our office.
Types of TMJ / TMD Treatment
Oral surgery is the most common treatment for TMJ as a form of TMD. A surgical procedure to realign the jaw to reduce friction leading to TMJ is a serious but effective solution for this type of TMD. Otherwise, our dentists can also determine if oral prosthetics, including overnight mouth guards, are a wise investment for the treatment of TMJ. Medication may also be required to reduce swelling caused by inflammation and infection.
